Holding Hands with Haiti

Haiti

The “Holding Hands with Haiti” project was initiated last year, just after the devastating earthquake on January 12th 2010, and has raised an amazing 31,000 Euros to date.

The aim of the project is two-fold:

  • to raise money to support and extend a rural school in the village of Fonfrede,
  • to encourage awareness amongst Kings College students about the cause of the terrible earthquake and its tragic consequences.

By working directly in collaboration with the NGO “Acoger y Compartir” (www.acogerycompartir.org), 100% of money raised by Kings College, has gone directly to Fonfrede school with tangible results.

The money raised so far has enabled:

  • 300 students to attend Fonfrede school free of charge this school year.
  • 280 students to attend a summer camp at the school.
  • The building of a security wall around the school.
  • The building of a kitchen and dining room.
  • The provision of food for the children attending school; often their only food of the day.
  • The building of two wells.

Education is one of the priorities for the reconstruction of Haiti. The May Fayre provides a wonderful opportunity to raise more funds for this project and in doing so, to give the children at Fonfrède school an education and a chance to break out of the poverty trap.
